Carnival in Rio
Carnival
will be celebrated from 21st to 24th of February, thus immediately
after LISHEP 2004 is over! Carnival in Rio is very well known
world-wide, specially due to the famous presentations of huge samba
devoted associations called Samba Schools, which "parade" across the
Marquês de Sapucaí avenue towards the Sambódramo
"arena" for an apotheosis of samba. But
there is also a much less known (to foreigners) way of celebrating
Carnival
in Rio. For about a whole month before the popular party starts and
during
the Carnival itself, many (a couple dozen or so) smaller associations
promote
an authentic popular carnival on the Rio streets. They are named
"Blocos
de Rua" (translate to something like street bands) and march dancing
and
singing through the streets, with some people wearing costumes and
disguises
for carnival, everybody in a very participant way and a happy mood. It
is
even possible to buy thematic T-shirts specially illustrated (many of
them
by famous Brazilian artists) for these blocos.
Next,
we give a short list of some of the most famous and traditional "Blocos
de Rua", as well as the places they are expected to meet and prepare
for
the parade. Parede dates will be added later as they become
available.
