ATTENTION:
WELCOME COCKTAIL DATE HAS CHANGED
The Welcome Cocktail was
previously scheduled for Sunday evening, February 15th. Due to logistic
problems, arrival of many participants and the participation of local
people, we decided to move the Welcome Cocktail to the evening of the
first day of the
Workshop, MONDAY
16th,
in the Campus of the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro . More
details will be given in the opening session.

TRANSPORTATION (Only from FEBRUARY 16th to 20th)
From Airport to Hotel Gloria
We have made an arrangement with COOTRAMO (Taxi Company
at the International Airport)
in order to get special rates for the LISHEP participants. The
price is R$ 46,00 (~ US$ 15.00) to go from the Airport to Hotel Gloria
(prepaid). COOTRAMO has a desk
inside the airport and will have a list of participants with their
arrival schedule. In order to prepare this schedule, please, inform the secretariat your flight number,
departure city and time of arrival at Rio.
From Hotel Gloria to the University
(UERJ) -Conference Room: Auditorium 11
1. BY TAXI: Taxis are
available in front of the Hotel. A run to UERJ costs around R$15,00.
Taxis runs are not covered by the School Organization.
2. BY METRO: It takes about
10 minutes walking from the hotel to the nearest Metro station (CATETE station); ask
for directions at the hotel desk. The Rio metro
has two branches, called LINHA 1 and LINHA 2 (line 1 and line 2).
A
schematic view of these lines and its stations can be found here. At
the CATETE
station, which is served by LINHA 1, take the
train going to SAENS
PEÑA direction. To go to UERJ you must
commute to LINHA 2 at ESTÁCIO
station and
take another train, which goes towards PAVUNA. Drop at MARACANÃ station (the
2nd station after ESTÁCIO)
and go walking to UERJ, which is nearly 500 meters away from the
station. Remember to print and bring with you copies of the maps,
available from the web page, of UERJ surroundings and building plants.
3. BY
VANS (MINIBUS): Two 15-sits COOTRAMO vans will be available
every
morning in front of the hotel, at LISHEP Organization expenses. They
will leave the hotel no later than 8:15 a.m.
and go directly to the University, with no
stops.
TUTORIALS
All
Tutorial lectures will be
given in the Auditorium
11, located at the 1st floor of UERJ's main building (Pavilhão
João Lyra Filho).

The
room 3017A, located on the 3rd floor of block A, in the Physics
Institute,
will be available to the speakers.
VISA
You MAY
NEED A VISA to enter Brazil, depending on your nationality. Please,
contact the Brazilian diplomatic representation in your country
for more detailed information.

INFORMATION ABOUT RIO DE JANEIRO
Weather
Rio de
Janeiro is located on
the Tropics. During summer, from December to March, temperatures range
from 23 C (72 F) to 35 (95 F).
Time Zone
Electrical Power
Electrical power in
Rio is mostly 110 Volts / 60 cycles, A.C, but some hotels provide 220
Volts outlets.
Phone Calls
Direct dial and
collect calls can be
placed from any telephone. Pay phones are located throughout the city
and run on cards which can bepurchased virtually
anywhere.
Currency
Brazilian
currency is the Real (R$). The
official rate of exchange is available from daily newspapers, hotel
cashiers,
banks and
travel agencies. Cash
and travellers checks are easily exchanged at these locations. Many
hotels and shops accept foreign currency and Credit Cards. Currently,
the dollar to real rate has been around US$ 1.00 = R$ 2,90. We use the site
http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic to update the currency changes.
Business
Hour
Shops and most offices are open
from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9:00 a.m.
to 1:00 p.m. on
Saturday. Banks are open Monday through Friday from 10:00
a.m. to 4:30 pm. Most Shopping Centers and Malls remain open from 9:00
a.m.
to 10:00 p.m., every day. Many pharmacies, supermarkets and small
grocery
stores are open also on Sunday.
Tipping
Tips are usually given in restaurants and bars, when not included in
the bill. They vary from 10% to 15%.
